January 9, 2025 Melliet – Darfur24 The humanitarian situation inside IDP camps of Melliet, North Darfur, has deteriorated, while the city is almost deserted and isolated from the world due to communication cut-offs and market closures.
A citizen who Melliet left last Sunday and arrived in Tina, Sudan, on the border with Chad, told “Darfur24” that residents, especially those in displacement shelters, are living in tragic conditions, after the decline in commercial activities, shop closures, and cessation of the city’s market activity.
He pointed to the difficulty of obtaining water and food in shelters and the absence of national and international organizations working to provide relief supplies.
In turn, a former employee of Humanitarian Aid Commission in Melliet, who preferred to remain anonymous, told “Darfur24” that the city has not received any relief supplies for a long time, despite the flow of aid trucks from Tina crossing without any threats to their arrival.
Eyewitnesses from the city confirmed that the ban on satellite Wi-Fi devices in the city continued for a period of nearly a month, while some neighborhoods were allowed to operate them.
A correspondent for “Darfur 24” from Melliet reported that the security situation in the city is calm, with some citizens continuing to flee to other areas, fearing that the city would be exposed to air strikes or battles between the Joint Force and Rapid Support Forces.
He noted that warplanes carried out air strikes outside the city on Tuesday, without any casualties or property damage.
He continued: “The city’s market operates partially, which avails vegetables, meat, coffee shops and some food traders.”
Melliet is considered the most important commercial outlets between Sudan and neighboring Libya, and witnessed active commercial activities following the outbreak of fighting in the country. The movement of large commercial trucks between the two countries stopped after fierce battles in a number of areas between the Joint Force of Armed Movements and Rapid Support Forces.
