Darfur 24, December 11( Port Sudan) On Monday, the United Nations condemned the attack that targeted the International Committee of Red Cross convoy in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, killing two people and wounding seven others.
The Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkwita Salami, expressed in a statement “deep concern and shock over the news of the attack on the International Committee of the Red Cross convoy in Khartoum on Sunday.”
The statement added: “I am horrified by this reckless attack on the International Committee of the Red Cross convoy, which tragically claimed the lives of two people and injured 7 others, including 3 from the International Committee of the Red Cross.”
The statement noted that “the convoy clearly bears the Red Cross emblem, which is a global symbol of neutrality and protection.”
She stated, “The humanitarian convoy, which included 3 ICRC vehicles and 3 buses, was scheduled to evacuate more than 100 civilians at risk from Khartoum to the city of Wad Madani (central), when it was attacked upon entering the evacuation zone.”
The statement stressed that “civilians, humanitarian relief workers and medical personnel are not a target.”
She added: “The parties involved in the conflict must ensure the safe evacuation of civilians from areas of active combat.”
The International Committee of the Red Cross expressed its “shock and alarm at the deliberate attack targeting its humanitarian convoy in Khartoum.”
She said in a statement, “The incident that occurred in the Al-Shajara neighborhood, south of Khartoum, resulted in the death of two people and the injury of seven others, including three ICRC employees.”
On Sunday, the Sudanese army announced that an International Committee of the Red Cross convoy had been attacked in Khartoum, resulting in casualties.
