Thousands of displaced people in Karnoi locality, about 200 kilometers northwest of El Fasher in North Darfur State, are facing worsening humanitarian conditions amid severe shortages of food, drinking water, healthcare and shelter, local officials said.
Karnoi Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Omar Suleiman Dahia said in a statement on Monday that the displaced population includes people from Karnoi and other localities, including Kutum, Arkori, Ambro, Mazbad, Kalbus and Dar Suwaini.
He said humanitarian needs had exceeded local authorities’ capacity, calling on humanitarian organizations to provide basic supplies and services urgently.
Mubarak Haroun Mohamed Adam, a member of Karnoi’s emergency response room, said many of the displaced had fled areas including Kamo, Qarsalba, Buba, Darma, Furawiya, Karnoi, Haramba, Darang, Maski, Luka, Abu Qumra and Ad Al-Khair following deteriorating security and attacks targeting civilians, including drone strikes.
He said many had previously spent years in refugee camps in eastern Chad before voluntarily returning to their areas in Karnoi, hoping to resume farming and rebuild their livelihoods.
However, the absence of an organized displacement site has made it difficult for aid agencies to reach them, Adam said. Many families are scattered across valleys and remote areas, living under trees or in the open.
He warned that the dispersed nature of the population risks leaving many people outside the humanitarian response, as their needs are harder to identify and services more difficult to deliver.
Adam called for urgent assistance, including drinking water, food, medicines, healthcare, therapeutic nutrition for children, shelter materials and supplies for women and children.
Karnoi, Ambro and the border town of Al-Tina are among the remaining areas in Darfur held by the Sudanese army and allied forces after the Rapid Support Forces expanded their control over much of the region.
