The Sudanese Founding Alliance, known as “TASIS,” accused the Sudanese army on Sunday of launching repeated attacks on a pipeline carrying South Sudanese oil through Sudan, saying the strikes caused explosions and fires along the line.
In a statement, the coalition said the attacks had targeted the pipeline since September 11, particularly in the northern Hamadi area, which it said is under the control of its forces.
TASIS said the attacks, which it attributed to the army and its allies, damaged sections of the pipeline and triggered extensive fires, describing the strikes as a threat to critical infrastructure and South Sudan’s economic interests.
The coalition said it had begun securing maintenance operations and deployed forces to protect engineers and workers along the pipeline before the force itself came under attack.
According to the statement, seven members of the protection force were killed in the attack.
South Sudan’s oil is transported through Sudan, where it passes through processing facilities including Heglig before being exported through Port Sudan on the Red Sea coast.
