Authorities affiliated with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) in the Nuba Mountains/South Kordofan region said they had contained recent clashes in the Jakma and Kain areas of Heiban County and that legal measures would be taken against those responsible.
The clashes erupted on September 5 in the Jakma and Aqur areas of Heiban locality, which is controlled by the SPLM-N, and lasted for three days. The fighting reportedly involved elements of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the SPLM-N over a dispute linked to a stolen motorcycle, leaving several people dead on both sides.
In a statement issued Thursday, Deputy Governor of South Kordofan/Nuba Mountains Daoud Ashaya Al-Foul said authorities had moved immediately to the affected areas and contained the situation, preventing the violence from spreading to neighbouring communities.
The regional government also expressed support for a statement by the Supreme Council of the Allied Hawazma, which said it was coordinating with regional and local authorities to contain the repercussions, protect residents and prevent tensions from spreading to Al-Furqan, nearby villages and neighbouring communities.
The council said it was working to ensure that legal measures were taken to establish the circumstances surrounding the clashes, restore rights and hold those responsible accountable.
The regional government expressed regret over the deaths, describing the violence as “passing incidents” in which lives were lost without justification.
It said the authorities had taken legal measures against those responsible and involved, while government officials and local community leaders were working to ease tensions and prevent attempts to drag the region into broader communal conflict that could threaten its social fabric.
