The civil administration in Zalingei locality, Central Darfur State, has banned the removal of corn and millet from the locality, citing rising prices and shortages linked to alleged hoarding and market monopolies.
The order, signed by Zalingei civil administration head Hussein Mohamed Abkar and reviewed by Darfur24, permanently prohibits the transportation of corn and millet outside the locality.
Anyone caught transporting the crops in a lorry faces a fine of two million Sudanese pounds, while the fine is one million pounds for shipments transported by a cruiser or motorized tuk-tuk.
The order also provides for the confiscation of entire shipments in cases of repeated violations.
Security and intelligence agencies, the import department, and economic security were instructed to enforce the order immediately.
The administration said the measure comes amid rising prices and shortages of corn and millet in Zalingei, which it attributed to market monopolies and the hoarding of large quantities of crops.
