The International Criminal Court (ICC) will hold a public hearing on September 8 to consider arguments on reparations for victims of war crimes and crimes against humanity for which former Janjaweed commander Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-al-Rahman, known as Ali Kushayb, was convicted.
The ICC said the hearing will allow the judges to hear submissions from the victims’ legal representatives, prosecution, Trust Fund for Victims, court registrar and defense team, as well as any participating Sudanese authorities and other court-appointed participants.
The hearing follows a December 9, 2025, order by the court directing the parties to submit arguments on reparations after Kushayb was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
The court said victims may seek reparations for harm resulting from the crimes for which the accused was convicted. Depending on the circumstances, reparations may be ordered individually or collectively and may be implemented through the Trust Fund for Victims.
In October 2025, the ICC convicted Kushayb on 27 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including murder, torture, persecution and outrages upon personal dignity committed in Deleij, Bindisi and Kadom between 2003 and 2004.
The Kushayb case is the first ICC case concerning crimes committed in Darfur to reach a conviction and sentencing.
