Al-Junaynah, July 16 (Darfur24)

Rehabilitation work has begun at Al-Junaynah University in West Darfur State as part of efforts to restore the institution and prepare it to resume studies after years of disruption caused by the war.

Dr. Fadlallah Hamdan Abkar, Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, told Darfur24 that the university administration fully supports the initiative, describing it as a key step toward restoring the university’s academic role.

He said the recent organization of the Sudanese Certificate examinations signals the gradual return of the education sector and could pave the way for the university to reopen.

Abkar said the resumption of studies would end four years of educational disruption for thousands of students.

He also said university employees had been deprived of their financial entitlements following exclusionary decisions during the conflict but expressed confidence that academic activities would resume once rehabilitation is completed.

The university suffered extensive damage during the conflict, with parts of the campus converted into shelters for displaced people after violence swept Al-Junaynah in 2023.

Al-Junaynah University has 12 faculties and more than 15,000 students, making it one of the largest higher education institutions in the Darfur region.

The West Darfur state government recently formed a committee to oversee the university’s rehabilitation following consultations with faculty members and staff, as part of efforts to resume classes as soon as possible.
