Al-Liri, July 07 (Darfur24)

Humanitarian sources have warned of rapidly deteriorating conditions at the Famir displacement camp in Al-Liri locality, South Kordofan State, citing severe shortages of basic services, the absence of humanitarian assistance, and growing concerns over unsafe drinking water.

A humanitarian volunteer, who requested anonymity for security reasons, told Darfur24 that the camp lacks access to healthcare, nutrition services, safe drinking water, and sanitation facilities, which increases the risk of disease outbreaks among displaced families.

The volunteer stated that both displaced people and members of the host community rely on an unprotected water source located near a gold mining area, raising concerns about potential chemical contamination. The absence of sanitation facilities has also led to widespread open defecation, further heightening public health risks.

According to the volunteer, the camp shelters around 3,850 displaced people, most of them women and children, including about 310 children and 127 female-headed households, all of whom face acute protection and humanitarian needs.

She said no government or humanitarian organizations are currently providing assistance in the camp, leaving displaced families dependent on the limited support available from the host community.

The camp also serves as a temporary transit point for people fleeing areas controlled by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), before they continue to other destinations.

Humanitarian organizations and local charities have called for an urgent multi-sector response, including food assistance, healthcare, nutrition, clean water, sanitation services, and protection programs for vulnerable groups.
