Al-Junaynah, April 15 (Darfur24)
A high-level United Nations delegation led by World Food Programme Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau held talks with West Darfur authorities on facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid during a field visit to El Geneina, part of a broader tour across Darfur.
Skau said the visit comes at a critical time as Sudan enters its fourth year of war, aiming to assess conditions on the ground and identify urgent needs. He emphasized that the World Food Programme remains impartial and focuses solely on delivering food assistance to affected populations.
He noted that the agency will engage donors to mobilize additional funding, warning that resource shortages have already forced reductions in aid. “Sudan remains a priority, given one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises,” he said, calling on all parties to ensure safe and unhindered access for aid delivery.
For his part, Tijani Al-Tahir Karshoum, head of the civil administration in West Darfur, said the complex reality of divided territorial control between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces continues to hinder humanitarian operations.
He described the situation in Darfur and Kordofan as “catastrophic,” noting that current humanitarian coverage does not exceed 20 percent of actual needs. Karshoum added that local authorities are working to facilitate the movement of aid organizations and ensure security, urging increased international support to address the growing crisis.
