Nyala, March 27 (Darfur24)

At least 18 children have died in recent weeks in Atash camp for displaced people north of Nyala, South Darfur, amid deteriorating health conditions and a severe lack of basic services, local sources said.

An administration at the camp told Darfur24 that the children died during February and March due to measles and malnutrition, citing shortages of medicines and therapeutic food in health centers.

The source also reported the deaths of four women during childbirth in March, attributing the fatalities to the absence of emergency care and essential medical services inside the camp.

“Health centers are suffering from a severe shortage of medicines and therapeutic food, which has led to a serious deterioration in the conditions of children and pregnant women,” the source said.

Atash camp hosts more than 120,000 displaced people, including new arrivals from El Fasher and camps such as Zamzam and Abu Shouk, which places an additional strain on already limited health services.

The situation comes amid growing warnings of a deepening humanitarian crisis across Darfur, driven by continued displacement and a weak health and humanitarian response.
