Nyala/Tawila, March 16 (Darfur24)
Fires broke out in several areas of Darfur on Friday and Saturday, destroying a mining market and dozens of homes in displacement camps in South and North Darfur, according to eyewitnesses and local sources.
In South Darfur’s Al-Radoum locality, a fire destroyed the “Dharaba” artisanal mining market, causing losses estimated at more than 500 million Sudanese pounds and forcing traders and workers to flee the area in search of food and shelter.
Another fire in the town of Qureida, about 90 kilometers south of Nyala, burned more than 30 houses in the “Babanusa” camp for displaced people, including 16 homes that were destroyed, residents said.
Meanwhile, in North Darfur, a large fire swept through the displaced persons’ compound in the “Dali” camp south of Tawila, burning dozens of houses and causing significant property damage. Residents managed to extinguish the fire without reported casualties.
Fires frequently occur in Darfur during the windy seasons due to the widespread use of highly flammable materials, such as straw, in traditional homes and markets.
