El-Obeid, January 29 (Darfur24)

Security authorities in the city of El-Obeid arrested a teacher identified as Hassan Ali Hassan, also known as “Imam,” on Monday evening and filed charges against him related to morality, public order, and incitement of hatred.

Sources from El-Obeid told Darfur24 that security forces transferred Hassan to the city’s Central Police Station, where a case was opened against him under Article 14 of the Cybercrimes Law of 2007 and Article 64 of the Criminal Law of 1991. The sources said authorities did not disclose details of the specific incidents underlying the charges.

According to the sources, Hassan is known for his criticism of government policies and his opposition to the ongoing war and its humanitarian and economic consequences on citizens, suggesting that the arrest may be linked to his publicly expressed views.

They noted that the arrest comes amid mounting tension and fears of escalating targeting of civilians as the security and political crisis deepens.

Article 14 of the Cybercrimes Law criminalizes the production, publication, or promotion of content through information networks or computer devices that violates public decency or public order, with penalties of up to five years in prison, a fine, or both. While Article 64 of the Sudanese Penal Code criminalizes incitement of hatred, contempt, or enmity between groups based on race, color, or language in a manner that endangers public peace, with penalties of up to two years in prison, a fine, or both.
