Nyala, January 08 (Darfur24)

Communal kitchens have resumed operations in several displacement shelters in Nyala, including Al-Salam and Al-Zahra, following an intervention by the emergency room and health centers in the city.

Last December, the emergency room announced the suspension of communal kitchen services in shelters due to a lack of donor funding, leaving thousands of displaced people without regular meals.

In a statement published on its Facebook page, the emergency room said shelters have become almost entirely dependent on daily meals provided through the communal kitchens, amid a steadily worsening humanitarian situation.

The statement explained that the resumption of food services aims to alleviate the suffering of displaced families, whose numbers continue to rise, emphasizing that their needs extend beyond food to include other necessities.

More than 5,000 displaced people are currently housed in Nyala’s shelters, most of them women and elderly people, along with about 1,200 children spread across eight shelters.

Communal kitchens in Nyala shelters have repeatedly stopped and resumed operations in recent months due to sporadic and insufficient donor funding, raising ongoing concerns about the sustainability of food assistance for displaced families.
