Nyala, December 23 (Darfur24)

Medical sources said on Monday that Nyala Specialized Hospital in South Darfur State has resumed providing medical services after being closed for several months due to a staff strike.

Medical staff at the hospital had been on strike since September, protesting the administration’s failure to pay financial incentives. Previous attempts to resolve the dispute had failed.

Sources told Darfur24 that the hospital resumed operations last week, during which several surgical procedures were carried out.

They stated that the hospital director, who was appointed during the strike, reached an agreement with the medical staff to pay their financial entitlements for the strike period, although outstanding arrears from previous months were excluded from the new year’s budget.

Under the agreement, several staff members who had earlier submitted their resignations returned to work, the sources added.

Other medical sources said staff are still owed about 360 million Sudanese pounds dating back to July, in addition to unpaid Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha bonuses.

The sources said the Rapid Support Forces leadership had previously paid funds under a contract with the hospital administration following the outbreak of the war, but alleged that the money was mismanaged by the former administration.

Nyala Specialized Hospital, established through community efforts, houses departments including urology, general surgery, and orthopedics, and serves residents of the Darfur region as well as patients from Chad and the Central African Republic.
