Chad, December (Darfur24)
Sudanese refugees in Chad reported on Thursday that armed attacks and looting had taken place inside several refugee camps, amid worsening living conditions.
Refugee activist Adel Attar told Darfur24 that residents carried out armed attacks and acts of looting in the Adari and Abunqi camps, targeting refugees, shops, and satellite internet outlets.
Attar said the camps are facing a severe shortage of drinking water, while food aid distributions have been suspended for some time. He added that humanitarian organizations have shifted from food assistance to cash-based support.
“An amount of 1,500 Chadian francs per person—equivalent to about 75,000 Sudanese pounds—is distributed monthly, and sometimes every two months,” he said.
Millions of Sudanese have fled to Chad since the outbreak of war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, most of them from the Darfur region. Refugees are primarily hosted in camps around Adré—the largest concentration of Sudanese refugees—as well as in the Abunqi and Marra camps, while others are settled in the city of Abéché.
