Al-Daein, December16 (Darfur24)

A senior government official from East Darfur State has died in detention at Degres Prison in Nyala, South Darfur, amid allegations of torture and medical neglect.

Adam Ali, the former acting Director General of the Ministry of Finance in East Darfur, died inside the prison, according to a source close to his family. Relatives said they were informed of his death on Monday by prison authorities, who attributed it to complications from diabetes.

However, a family member, who requested anonymity, told Darfur24 that Adam Ali had suffered from both diabetes and high blood pressure and that his health had steadily deteriorated following mistreatment and torture during his detention. The relative said the family received this information from a detainee who was later released.

Adam Ali was arrested in January during a wide-scale campaign carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeting senior civil servants in Al-Daein. Those detained included Mohamed Ibrahim Saeed, the executive director of Al-Daein locality. The RSF accused the officials of spying for the army-backed government based in Port Sudan.

Adam Ali had worked in the Accounts Department of the Ministry of Finance in East Darfur since 2000 and held several administrative positions before becoming Director General of Finance under the civilian administration affiliated with the RSF.
