The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, arrived in El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur State, on Thursday as part of a field visit to the Darfur region, which includes North, Central, and West Darfur.
Sources told Darfur24 that Fletcher departed El Geneina for North Darfur without holding meetings with officials in West Darfur State.
The Rapid Support Forces’ Government of Peace and Unity welcomed the visit, expressing its readiness to cooperate with the United Nations and humanitarian organizations to help alleviate the suffering of civilians affected by the war.
In a press statement, the Government of Peace described Fletcher’s visit as an important step in supporting humanitarian efforts. It reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating access to aid for all those in need without discrimination and to creating conditions that enable humanitarian organizations to operate effectively.
It also reiterated its support for the Quartet initiative and its commitment to advancing the comprehensive peace process aimed at halting the fighting and addressing the historical roots of Sudan’s conflicts, in pursuit of stability and sustainable development.
