Addis Ababa, October 28 (Darfur24)
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has condemned the escalating violence and reported atrocities in El Fasher, North Darfur, following the city’s takeover by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a statement issued on Monday, Youssouf expressed deep concern over reports of grave violations of human rights and international humanitarian law, including alleged war crimes and ethnically targeted killings of civilians.
He reminded all parties of their obligations under international law to protect civilians, warning that those responsible for such acts will be held accountable.
The AU Chairperson called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the opening of humanitarian corridors to allow aid to reach affected populations.
He stressed that there is no military solution to Sudan’s crisis, urging all actors to engage in dialogue and commit to a peaceful and inclusive political process.
Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union’s solidarity with the people of Sudan and its unwavering support for their aspirations for peace, unity, and democracy.
