Nyala, October 25 (Darfur24)
The Minister of Health in the Sudan Founding Alliance (Tasis) government, Alaa El-Din Nugud, has accused the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), led by Abdel Wahid Mohamed Nour, of blocking health teams from reaching areas affected by a cholera outbreak in eastern Jebel Marra.
Nugud, speaking on Sunday, said the SLM, which controls parts of Jebel Marra in Central and South Darfur, as well as Tawila locality in North Darfur, has barred health workers from accessing several areas where new cholera cases have been reported.
He called on the movement’s leadership to cooperate in combating the spread of epidemics and infectious diseases, warning that the restrictions could worsen the health situation.
The minister added that most areas under the control of forces affiliated with the Tasis coalition have recovered from cholera and other epidemics, praising the efforts of health authorities and organizations working in the sector.
Nugud said the Ministry of Health has been in continuous contact with international, regional, and local organizations to address health challenges, secure medical supplies, and improve service delivery.
Meanwhile, the Director General of the Ministry of Health in the Tasis government, Mustafa Al-Barmaki, announced the detection of three cases of dengue fever in South Darfur.
Al-Barmaki said the ministry has developed a strategy to combat dengue fever and called on donors to sustain their support, noting that the ministry faces severe shortages of resources but remains determined to overcome challenges.
Cholera has spread to 13 localities across South Darfur State, with 5,831 reported cases, including 275 deaths, before a vaccination campaign was launched in several states across Darfur.
