Umm Kadada, September 18 (Darfur24)
Seven people died and several others fell ill on Saturday after an outbreak of acute diarrhea in Umm Kadada, 178 km southeast of El Fasher, North Darfur, according to medical sources and residents.
Mohammed Issa, a laboratory doctor at Umm Kadada Rural Hospital, told Darfur24 the cases are suspected to be cholera, with three patients still receiving treatment.
He said the hospital faces severe shortages, noting the absence of a general practitioner since April, when the only doctor in the town was killed during clashes between the Shogara militia and the Rapid Support Forces.
Issa added that shortages of equipment and the lack of a fully equipped laboratory are limiting proper diagnosis.
The Darfur region is already grappling with a widespread cholera outbreak, which has claimed around 500 lives and infected about 12,000 people, according to the Darfur Displaced Persons and Refugees Coordination Office.
