WFP Sudan spokesperson Mohamed Jamal El Din said the programme is trying to deliver humanitarian aid to those trapped in El Fasher, in order to avert a humanitarian disaster that would spill over into the country.
In exclusive statements to Darfur 24, spokesperson Jamal El Din warned of a continuing deterioration in the humanitarian situation in Sudan, particularly regarding food security, with more than 24 million people suffering from acute hunger.
He pointed out that the program contributes to supporting millions of people monthly, and that the program has played a significant role in reducing the risk of famine in six areas of Central and West Darfur by delivering aid to nearly one million people.
He stated that the program was able to reach more than 5 million people during the month of May alone.
Regarding the humanitarian situation in El Fasher, he explained that the program is redoubling its efforts to deliver aid to those trapped there, in order to avoid a humanitarian disaster that would extend beyond its borders.
The program also stated that it is in dire need of urgent support estimated at approximately $645 million to cover its operations for the next six months, stressing the importance of allowing humanitarian aid convoys to reach besieged areas, including El Fasher and Kadugli.
The spokesperson added that, “Despite the support provided by partners
,throughout the conflict, current funding is completely incommensurate with the scale of the crisis.” The humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan.
