Nyala, October 2 (Darfur24)
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have arrested two individuals in Nyala, South Darfur, on accusations of collaborating with the Sudanese army, local sources and eyewitnesses told Darfur24 on Wednesday.
Family members of one of the detainees said RSF intelligence personnel arrested Al-Fadil Mohammed, a teacher, last Thursday and transferred him to Dagris Prison, west of the city. They said Al-Fadil was detained on allegations of collaborating with government authorities in Port Sudan.
Al-Fadil, who teaches at a school south of Nyala, had been tasked by fellow teachers to collect their monthly salaries, paid from Port Sudan, because he holds an account at the Bank of Khartoum, according to the family.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing three armed men detain Al-Fadil from his workplace at the Nyala popular market on Thursday. He has recently been working on money transfers to facilitate payments to teachers.
Several teachers expressed concern over the Ministry of Education’s demand for lists of their names, fearing the authorities might suspend their salaries if they resumed teaching in RSF-held areas. They said RSF forces have increasingly harassed teachers by arresting their representatives and financial agents to pressure them to return to work.
Separately, local sources said RSF forces arrested another man, Ibrahim, a financial accountant at the Ministry of Health, on Tuesday. No reasons for his detention have been disclosed.
The RSF has previously arrested several teachers, employees, and money transfer operators in Adal Farsan and Nyala on similar allegations of collaborating with the army-controlled government in Port Sudan.
The South Darfur state government, which relocated to Port Sudan, has suspended around 600 state employees, including teachers, for working with the RSF after the group installed a civilian administration in the state last year. The government pledged to continue paying salaries to those who comply with its directives
