Nyala , February 10(Darfur24)
A source from Kalma camp for displaced persons east of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, revealed on Monday the rape and abduction of 16 displaced women from the camp.
A source in the Women’s Protection Unit in the camp – who preferred to remain anonymous – told “Darfur24” that they “documented 14 cases of rape during the past month of January, including a case that was transferred to Nyala Hospital.”
He stated that they documented two cases of kidnapping from the Bilil market, and 26 cases of physical violence against displaced women.
He explained that all the incidents of rape and kidnapping occurred while the displaced women were going to work outside the camp or collecting firewood, stressing the increase in cases of rape and violence against displaced women during the past month of January.
The source indicated that a displaced person was detained in the mountain market by the Rapid Support Forces on charges of belonging to the Sudanese army, before he was released after paying 500,000 pounds.
The Kalma camp for displaced persons has housed about 300,000 displaced persons since the beginning of the civil conflict in the Darfur region in 2003, and dozens of families from different Darfur states settled there during the war that broke out in April 2023.
The Rapid Support Forces took control of South Darfur State in October 2023, following fierce battles with the army.
