Kampala, August 7(Darfur24)
Political leaders of the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Minni Arko Minawi, announced on Thursday the start of arrangements for holding the movement’s General Conference within a maximum period of 60 days, “to correct the movement’s course.”
They announced the formation of a leadership committee to work on holding the General Conference, consisting of Mahmoud Korina, Assistant to the Movement’s Chairman for Legal Affairs; Mutawakkil Mohamed Musa, Political Advisor to the Movement’s Chairman; Essam Al-Haj, Head of the Movement’s Offices in the European Union; Al-Fadil Al-Tijani, the Movement’s Political Secretary; and Essam Kater, Director of the President’s Office.
The committee’s responsibilities are limited to attracting the necessary resources to prepare for the conference and to prepare and arrange for it, according to the statement read at the press conference.
The leaders stated at their press conference that the decision to abandon neutrality in the war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces was made by Minni Minawi without consulting the movement’s institutions.
The leaders pledged to work to stop the war, correct the movement’s course, and contribute to achieving peace and a return to the path of democratic transition.
They pointed out that the movement’s leadership has deviated from its revolutionary path and engaged in proxy wars. They also have slid into populist and tribal rhetoric that will exacerbate divisions rather than unify ranks.
