Omdurman, October 25 (Darfur24)

Eight people were killed, and more than 30 others were injured on Saturday when a military vehicle belonging to the joint forces supporting the Sudanese Armed Forces ran over civilians at a transport stop in Omdurman, Khartoum State, field and medical sources told Darfur24.

The sources said the speeding Land Cruiser struck people waiting at a transport stop in the Jibin Jibin vegetable market, damaging a passenger bus and injuring civilians at the scene.

Four people died instantly, while the injured were taken to Al-Naw Hospital in Omdurman, according to the sources.

A medical source later confirmed to Darfur24 that the death toll had risen to eight, with more than 30 people injured. The source said the hospital’s emergency department was overwhelmed, forcing some patients to lie on the floor because of a shortage of beds.

Eyewitnesses said the vehicle tried to flee after the incident, but members of the joint force stationed at the vegetable market caught up and apprehended its occupants.

Residents complained about what they described as reckless driving by joint force members in urban areas, saying it had caused accidents involving civilians. They called on the authorities to take measures to prevent similar incidents.
