Kadugli, October 11 (Darfur24)

Five members of one family, including a mother, her three children and their grandmother, were killed in artillery shelling in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan State, while a woman was injured in a drone attack on a gold mine in Qadir locality, local sources told Darfur24 on Saturday.

Sources in Kadugli said the shelling occurred after a period of relative calm in the city. An armoured vehicle positioned west of the city reportedly fired four shells towards residential areas, hitting the edge of the Klimo neighbourhood in the city centre and the beginning of the neighbouring Ambatah area to the east.

The Sudanese Doctors Network condemned the shelling, attributing it to the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N). The network said preliminary information indicated that a mother and her three children had been killed in the attack.

Local sources, however, reported that five family members, including the children’s grandmother, had died.

The shelling comes amid worsening living conditions in Kadugli, where high food prices and deteriorating healthcare services have added to residents’ hardships.

Meanwhile, in Qadir locality, a woman was injured when drones believed to belong to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeted the Bajun gold mine, according to local sources.

Sources from Bajun told Darfur24 that the drones struck an area where military personnel were gathered. The injured woman received treatment at a medical centre at the mine.

The Sudanese Armed Forces control Qadir locality and its capital, Kalogi, in the Nuba Mountains region of South Kordofan.

Since the outbreak of war in Sudan on April 15, 2023, South Kordofan has experienced escalating fighting between the warring parties, alongside reports of looting and growing concerns over attacks on civilians and vital infrastructure.
