Kutum, October 02 (Darfur24)
A gunman was wounded on Thursday during an exchange of fire between a Rapid Support Forces (RSF) unit and guards at Kutum prison in North Darfur State, following an attack allegedly aimed at freeing an RSF member detained on theft charges, according to local sources.
Sources told Darfur24 that an RSF unit attacked the prison in an attempt to release the detainee, prompting guards to open fire on the attackers. One of the gunmen was wounded in the exchange.
The incident caused panic among residents in neighborhoods surrounding the prison, including patients at the nearby Kutum Hospital, the sources said.
Authorities later intervened and brought the situation under control, according to the sources.
The sources said conditions inside the prison have since returned to normal and that the security situation in Kutum is currently stable.
