Nyala, October 02 (Darfur24)
Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, witnessed mass marches on Thursday as part of what organizers called the “Million-Man March for Recovery,” with the participation of officials from the state’s founding government and civil administration.
The marches took place in the city center, with participants calling for an end to the war, peace and tolerance, while rejecting hate speech. Demonstrators also raised slogans accusing the Sudanese army of using chemical weapons in the ongoing conflict.
Addressing the crowds, Prime Minister Mohamed Hassan al-Ta’aishi said the government supports ending the war and achieving a just peace that would end marginalization and establish a Sudan based on new foundations that accommodate all its components.
Al-Ta’aishi said recovery had begun with the return of students to schools and the reopening of hospitals, police stations and government institutions in villages.
He also called on displaced people to return to their areas, saying they had been forced to flee by the Islamic Movement, and that the government was prepared to provide security for their return.
However, residents told Darfur24 that authorities closed markets and shops, as well as schools and government institutions, during the marches.
Residents also said Rapid Support Forces (RSF) members were deployed around the livestock market and forced restaurant and café owners to close their businesses.
Darfur24 could not independently verify the reported closures or the allegations made during the demonstrations.
