Dozens of children in Abdulshakur, north of Kutum city in North Darfur State, have developed unexplained skin rashes and lesions, raising concerns about a possible spread of the condition amid limited health services.
A medical source in Kutum told Darfur24 that dozens of cases have been reported among children in Abdulshakur, nearby displacement camps and surrounding areas. Some patients have been transferred to Kutum for examination, while others are expected to be referred to Nyala for further tests.
Hawa Youssef Adam, whose child is affected, told Darfur24 that the symptoms begin with itching, followed by bruising and skin rashes. She said the symptoms have disrupted the children’s sleep and appeared to be spreading rapidly among them.
She also reported a heavy presence of flies in the area, alongside food shortages and malnutrition among dozens of children, adding to concerns over their health.
On Saturday, the Abdulshakur Emergency Room reported cases of unexplained illness among children, including bruises, rashes and wounds on different parts of the body. It warned that the condition could spread without diagnosis and adequate healthcare.
The emergency room called on health authorities and humanitarian organizations to urgently investigate the cases, provide treatment, and strengthen health services in the area.
The cause and nature of the condition have not yet been medically determined. Health authorities are continuing to monitor the cases and conduct examinations.
