A court in Dongola on Sunday sentenced six police officers, including the director of the Criminal Investigation Department in Northern State, to death by hanging after convicting them of involvement in the torture and killing of a detainee.
In a statement, the Public Prosecution said Judge Nizar Ahmed Abdullah of the Dongola General Criminal Court handed the death sentence to Police Lieutenant Colonel Nizar Ahmed Al-Hassan, director of the Northern State Criminal Investigation Department.
The court also sentenced Police Sergeant Elias Abdel Rahman, Police Corporal Mohamed Abdel Rahman, Police Corporal Khaled Yasser, Police Soldier Musab Abdel Rahman, and Police Soldier Rami.
According to the prosecution, the defendants were convicted under Articles 21 and 130 of the Sudanese Criminal Code of 1991, as amended in 2020, relating to criminal conspiracy and premeditated murder.
The case stems from the torture of a detainee while in custody at the Criminal Investigation Department in Dongola. Prosecutors said the detainee died from injuries sustained during the assault.
The Public Prosecution said it referred the case to court after completing its investigation and presenting evidence that the judge relied upon in reaching the verdict.
The court acquitted Police Major Ammar Abdullah Al-Khader, finding insufficient evidence to establish his criminal responsibility.
The ruling comes amid continued calls by human rights organizations for accountability over abuses committed against detainees in Sudan’s detention facilities.
