Khartoum, July 04 (Darfur24)

The Central Bank of Sudan announced on Saturday that it will withdraw six low-denomination banknotes from circulation, giving holders until July 30 to deposit them into bank accounts before they cease to be legal tender.

In a statement, the bank said the move is intended to “regulate the currency denomination structure in line with the economic reality” and was taken in the public interest.

The denominations affected are 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 Sudanese pound banknotes.

The bank said the notes can only be exchanged by depositing them into bank accounts at commercial bank branches and cannot be redeemed directly for cash.

It added that the notes will remain valid for transactions until the close of business on July 30, 2026. After that date, they will lose their legal tender status and will no longer be accepted in financial or commercial transactions.

The Central Bank said it would safeguard the rights of holders in areas where insecurity or limited banking services prevent them from exchanging the notes within the deadline, subject to its assessment.

The withdrawal was first announced in the Official Gazette on April 30, 2026, giving the public a three-month grace period to replace the affected banknotes.

The decision comes as the Sudanese pound continues to weaken in the parallel market amid the country’s ongoing economic crisis. It also follows recent institutional changes under the government, including the establishment of a central bank and a currency council.
