Khartoum, July 02 (Darfur24)

The National Umma Party said on Thursday that a court in White Nile State had sentenced retired Major General Habib Siddiq Sanada, a member of the party’s political bureau in the state, to death after convicting him of collaborating with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In a statement, the party condemned what it described as the growing use of politically motivated prosecutions against civilians, community leaders and political figures, arguing that recent court rulings reflect the politicization of Sudan’s judicial institutions.

The party said the case against Sanada forms part of a broader pattern of trials targeting individuals accused of remaining in or living under RSF-controlled areas, adding that such proceedings have failed to meet the standards of fair trial and due process.

It also cited the case of Mayor Saad Saghiroun, who it said died in detention in Al-Qatniya after falling ill. According to the statement, Mamoun Habani, deputy head of the Um Ramta area, remains in custody after receiving a death sentence alongside several residents accused of staying in the area after government authorities withdrew.

The National Umma Party further said that a court in Um Ruwaba sentenced the deputy head of a university administration to 15 years in prison, while a court in Dongola sentenced Dr. Ahmed Shaga to two years and one month in prison. It described both rulings as examples of the judiciary being used for political purposes.

The party also criticized prison sentences imposed in El Obeid against three displaced women, saying Limouna Nawar received a 10-year sentence, her 18-year-old daughter was sentenced to five years, and her 19-year-old niece, Marwa Mohamed Nawar, received a two-year sentence.

The statement accused the authorities of applying justice selectively, alleging that civilians have received harsh sentences while military commanders accused of abuses in Al Jazirah, North Darfur and West Kordofan have avoided accountability.

The National Umma Party called on the international community and national, regional and international human rights organizations to condemn what it described as violations by the de facto authorities and to press for an end to political interference in the judiciary.

There was no immediate response from the Sudanese authorities to the party’s allegations.
