The U.S. State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs has condemned the recent attack on the Ardamata Bridge in El Geneina, West Darfur, describing the structure as a critical route for humanitarian operations across the Darfur region.
The bridge was struck by a drone attack last week, causing extensive damage and forcing a complete suspension of traffic. Engineering teams are currently working to restore the crossing and resume movement along the route.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the Bureau of African Affairs said humanitarian organizations, including the Sudan Humanitarian Fund, depend on the bridge to deliver emergency food assistance and medical supplies to Zalingei and other areas of West and Central Darfur.
The bureau noted that the bridge has facilitated the movement of significant volumes of humanitarian aid during the current year. It warned that attacks on civilian and humanitarian infrastructure undermine efforts to reach vulnerable populations.
It also reiterated that there is no military solution to the conflict in Sudan and called on the warring parties to agree to a humanitarian ceasefire that would enable aid agencies to reach millions of civilians affected by the war.
The Ardamata Bridge is considered one of the most important transport links in West Darfur. It connects El Geneina with large parts of Darfur and Kordofan and serves as a key corridor for commercial goods, food supplies, and humanitarian assistance.
Humanitarian organizations operating in the region rely heavily on the bridge to transport relief materials. Prolonged disruption of the crossing could further complicate aid operations and worsen the humanitarian situation for conflict-affected communities in West Darfur.
