Nyala, April 29 (Darfur24)
A massive fire swept through the Al-Junaynah bus station market in Nyala on Monday night, destroying more than 600 shops and triggering widespread looting, according to residents and traders.
Witnesses said flames erupted around 10 p.m. and spread rapidly across the market, with fires breaking out simultaneously in four different areas, raising suspicions about the cause.
The blaze devastated large sections of one of Nyala’s busiest commercial hubs, including shops selling clothing, shoes, perfumes, and cosmetics. It marks the third major fire to hit the market in a short period.
A trader told Darfur24 that the losses are substantial, though a full assessment has yet to be conducted. He suggested the fire may have been deliberately set, noting that the market typically closes by 5 p.m. and is usually deserted at night.
Eyewitnesses also reported looting during the chaos, with individuals seen leaving the area carrying mobile phones and boxes of goods from damaged shops.
By Tuesday morning, large parts of the market remained closed, as traders and residents grappled with the scale of the destruction and growing concerns over security.
