Nyala, March 31 (Darfur24)
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Nyala, South Darfur, have launched a large-scale arrest campaign targeting drug activity and crime, residents said, amid worsening insecurity in the city.
Witnesses said the campaign began in recent days, focusing on markets and key locations such as the Mecca Bridge, with patrols inspecting vehicles and individuals, including tea stalls and public gathering points.
The move comes as residents report a growing spread of drugs and increased activity by dealers, alongside a surge in killings and armed robberies.
Local sources also alleged that some RSF members are involved in smuggling narcotic pills and alcohol from neighboring countries and distributing them locally. Witnesses said the campaign included arrests of individuals in military uniform believed to be linked to such activities.
The operation was marred by violence on Saturday, when a grenade was thrown during a confrontation in Al-Malja market, leaving several people seriously injured.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred after campaign members attempted to search other RSF personnel inside a shop. The dispute escalated, leading to a grenade being thrown into the shop.
Nyala has witnessed a worsening security vacuum in recent weeks, with rising incidents of violence, looting, and killings affecting civilians across the city.
