Nyala / Sarf Umra, March 26 (Darfur24)
A surge in violent crime across Darfur has left several people dead in recent days, highlighting worsening security conditions in the region.
In Nyala, South Darfur, a young man in his twenties, identified as Jibril Haroun, was shot dead on Tuesday after being abducted with three others by unidentified gunmen in a four-wheel drive vehicle.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers later released the three after looting their phones, but killed Jibril when he refused to unlock his device. His family has filed a report with Nyala North police.
The incident comes amid a rise in killings and armed robberies in the city, including the recent death of Mohamed Saleh Shawgar, particularly during the Eid al-Fitr period.
In a separate incident in Sarf Umra, North Darfur, secondary school teacher Abdul Rasoul Mohammed and his son Al-Rashid were shot dead last Friday during an attempted robbery while exchanging Eid greetings.
Relatives said the gunmen opened fire after the victims refused to hand over their belongings. Residents described the killing as a major shock, noting Abdul Rasoul’s long career as a respected mathematics teacher.
Local sources in Sarf Umra reported increasing insecurity, including armed robberies, kidnappings, and the spread of drugs, alongside an absence of effective policing.
Across Darfur and parts of Kordofan, residents have reported a growing wave of violent crime targeting civilians, traders, and farmers, amid ongoing challenges in restoring law and order.
