Khartoum, March 20 (Darfur24)

More than 9 million people are currently internally displaced in Sudan, while nearly 3.8 million have returned to their areas, according to a new report by the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), highlighting the scale of the country’s ongoing humanitarian crisis.

In its latest update, the DTM said the number of internally displaced persons has reached approximately 9,044,786, spread across 11,442 locations in 185 localities nationwide. Meanwhile, 3,858,136 returnees were recorded in 2,763 locations across 71 localities in nine states.

The report noted that 84% of returnees had been displaced within Sudan, compared to 16% returning from abroad. Children under the age of 18 make up the largest share of those affected, accounting for 55% of the displaced population and 52% of returnees.

In terms of trends, the number of displaced people has dropped by 22% from its previous peak and by 1% compared to last month, while the number of returnees increased by 5% over the same period.

Despite these shifts, the DTM stressed that the situation remains fluid and requires close monitoring, with displacement continuing in several مناطق due to deteriorating security conditions.

Field teams reported that on March 18, around 1,870 people were newly displaced from the villages of Faqousa and Karkariya in Habila locality, South Kordofan State, due to escalating insecurity. The displaced moved toward Habila town and neighboring areas in Dilling locality.

The report underscores the ongoing complexity of Sudan’s crisis, with displacement and returns occurring simultaneously amid persistent insecurity and limited access to livelihoods, hindering sustainable stability for affected populations.
