Jebel Awliya, March 06 (Darfur24)
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has announced the end of its activities at the “Martyr Wadallah” Primary Health Care Center in Jebel Awliya locality, south of Khartoum, after nearly three years of support that began in June 2023.
The organization said the decision followed the completion of rehabilitation works at the center and the full handover of its management to the state Ministry of Health.
MSF’s emergency coordinator in Sudan, Marta Cazorla, said that ending support for a facility the organization had accompanied for several years represents “an important sign of the intervention’s success.” She added that cooperation with the Ministry of Health helped strengthen the center’s infrastructure and laid the foundations for the continued delivery of quality medical services.
During the period of support, MSF provided medical supplies and technical assistance to the facility, while also rehabilitating the power and water systems and carrying out structural improvements to the building. The upgrades aimed to ensure the safe use of the center and improve patient flow and drug storage.
According to the organization, medical teams conducted approximately 199,000 consultations since June 2023, administered more than 65,000 vaccination doses, and treated over 19,000 malaria cases.
MSF said the center is now operating at full capacity under the supervision of the Ministry of Health, as part of efforts to promote sustainable, locally led management of health services.
The organization added that the Martyr Wadallah center is the first of several primary health care facilities it plans to support in Jebel Awliya under a more flexible strategy. MSF has been supporting the Tayba Al-Kababish health center since January and plans to expand its assistance to other centers in the coming weeks.
Jebel Awliya has recently seen a growing influx of returnees as fighting in the capital subsides. However, many residents are returning to neighborhoods where basic services remain limited due to extensive damage to infrastructure during the war.
