Nyala / Dilling, January 07 (Darfur24)

An activist was killed in South Darfur during an armed robbery attack, while another activist was arrested by military intelligence in South Kordofan, in two separate incidents that highlight the deteriorating security and human rights situation in the region.

In South Darfur, activist and volunteer Hassan Abdullah Hamid, known as “Hassan Tri,” was killed inside his home in Madangi town, rural Kelek, Shataya locality, about 140 kilometers west of Nyala, on Saturday, after being attacked by unidentified gunmen.

A relative of the deceased, Alaa El-Din Abkar, told Darfur24 that three armed men stormed Hassan’s home and attempted to steal his donkey. When the animal resisted, the attackers shot and killed it, and Hassan was fatally wounded during the attack.

Abkar said the donkey, locally known as a “Rifai,” was valued at more than 10 million Sudanese pounds and had previously been targeted by criminal gangs. He added that residents had repeatedly warned Hassan about threats related to the animal.

Hassan was known for his humanitarian and community work, particularly in supporting displaced people and coordinating assistance with humanitarian and international organizations in areas west of Nyala.

Meanwhile, in South Kordofan, local sources reported that emergency committee activist Al-Sadiq Issa Al-Tayeb was arrested by military intelligence on Sunday evening, January 5, in the city of Dilling.

Sources told Darfur24 that a military intelligence force arrested Al-Sadiq at around 5:00 PM while he was in the main Dilling market, before taking him to intelligence detention centers without providing reasons or presenting a legal arrest order.

The arrest took place in front of civilians, triggering tension inside the market amid an already fragile security situation. According to the sources, Al-Sadiq’s family and colleagues have not been allowed to visit him, and no official statements have been issued by the authorities regarding the circumstances of his detention or any charges against him.

Large areas of Darfur and South Kordofan have witnessed a surge in violence, armed robberies, and arrests, amid ongoing insecurity and the absence of effective civilian protection.
