Dilling, December 18 (Darfur24)

A primary school teacher in South Kordofan State died hours after his release from an army-run detention facility in Dilling, amid allegations of torture in custody, local sources and a teachers’ committee said.

Imam Al-Dhay, a teacher from the Al-Farshaya area, died at his home on Monday, December 17, after suffering kidney failure that relatives said began during his detention at facilities operated by Brigade 53 of the Sudanese army.

A relative told Darfur24 that Al-Dhay was arrested alongside his colleague, Professor Tartour Al-Dhay, who died last November under similar circumstances.

In a statement obtained by Darfur24, the Sudanese Teachers Committee said Imam Al-Dhay died as a result of injuries sustained from torture while held by military intelligence at the 54th Infantry Brigade in Dilling. The committee said both teachers were detained for months without judicial orders or formal charges.

The committee called for an independent investigation into the deaths, accountability for those responsible, and the immediate release of all arbitrarily detained teachers.
