Nyala, December 15 (Darfur24)

The women’s affairs officer at Atash displacement camp, north of Nyala in South Darfur State, reported that three displaced women were raped and another was assaulted by armed herders in incidents that occurred in November.

The official told Darfur24 that the attacks took place on farms north of Nyala, where a group of armed herders assaulted the women while they were working. The rape survivors were aged between 17 and 25 years, while another woman in her fifties was beaten with batons after she refused to allow livestock to graze on her farm.

She said the herders forcibly introduced their livestock onto farmlands during the planting and harvest seasons, a practice that has repeatedly led to violence against displaced women amid what she described as ongoing impunity.

The official added that seven cases of sexual and physical violence against displaced women were documented in October, most of which occurred while women were leaving the camp to seek work.

She explained that severe shortages of humanitarian assistance in displacement camps have forced many women to work on farms, in gardens, and as domestic workers in Nyala, exposing them to serious risks amid the failure of local authorities to provide adequate protection.
