Kabkabiya, November 24 (Darfur24)
A farmer was killed, and three others were wounded on Friday when armed men attacked them on their way back from their farms to Kabkabiya, 155 km west of El Fasher in North Darfur, according to eyewitnesses and local sources.
Ahmed Mohamed Al-Tayeb, a community leader, told Darfur24 that the gunmen intercepted four farmers returning from the Dali area and attempted to rob them of their donkey carts and the money they carried.
“When the farmers refused to surrender their belongings, the attackers opened fire,” he said. “One farmer died immediately, and the other three were transported to Kabkabiya Rural Hospital with injuries.”
Al-Tayeb added that the victims’ families filed a complaint with the federal police in Kabkabiya, but no steps have yet been taken to pursue the perpetrators.
Residents say such incidents have become frequent. Youssef, a farmer from Kabkabiya, reported that relatives in the Jadara area recently had their millet and peanut harvests looted.
“One farmer was also killed in Ghara al-Zawiya last week, and several others had their carts stolen after being beaten and threatened,” he added.
Farmers say they now move their peanut harvests into town before completing the full harvest cycle to prevent theft or damage by livestock.
Conflicts between farmers and herders recur annually in Darfur, often linked to “early shot” — when herders prematurely release their livestock into farmlands before the harvest is completed, leading to repeated friction despite seasonal conferences aimed at opening routes, securing grazing corridors, and protecting farms.
