Washington, November 21 (Darfur24)
US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he will act immediately, in coordination with regional partners, to help end the war in Sudan, an initiative he said comes at the request of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The announcement was met with swift approval from Sudan’s Sovereignty Council, which issued a statement welcoming Trump’s remarks.
Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan also posted on the “X” platform, thanking “President Trump and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman” for their efforts.
In a message published on “X,” Trump wrote: “Tremendous atrocities are taking place in Sudan, which has become the most violent place on earth, and the greatest humanitarian crisis ever.”
He added: “Arab leaders from across the region, and in particular the highly respected Saudi Crown Prince, who has just left the United States, have asked me to use the power and influence of the presidency to stop what is happening in Sudan immediately.”
Trump said the US would work with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and other Middle Eastern partners to “end these atrocities,” while also focusing on stabilizing Sudan.
He noted that Sudan possesses a rich civilization and culture but has suffered from deep corruption, adding that it “can be reformed through cooperation and coordination between countries, including those in the region that possess enormous wealth and want to see that reform happen.”
For its part, Sudan’s Sovereignty Council reiterated its appreciation for the efforts of Saudi Arabia and the United States to pursue a “just and equitable peace” in Sudan, stressing its readiness to engage seriously in any process that leads to the peace that the Sudanese people are waiting for.”
Trump’s statements came following his meeting with the Saudi Crown Prince, during which he confirmed he would personally take on the issue of ending the war in Sudan and had already begun working on it.
