Abu Matariq, November 6 (Darfur24)

A South Sudanese refugee was killed on Tuesday night by armed men while returning from the market to the Kario refugee camp in Bahr al-Arab locality, East Darfur State, according to local sources.

Eyewitnesses told Darfur24 that the victim, Kuaj Deng, was shot dead at around 10 p.m. by unidentified gunmen, after one of them opened fire with a Kalashnikov rifle.

A local leader, who asked not to be named, said that the local administration, in coordination with the Rapid Support Forces, arrested three suspects on Wednesday morning, and they are currently being held in custody.

Eyewitnesses added that the local administration and camp leaders, led by Sultan Ibrahim Weil, have agreed to pay blood money to resolve the incident this month.

Sultan Ibrahim Weil called on authorities and the Rapid Support Forces to strengthen security and ensure the safety of refugees in the Kario camp, noting that the killing has caused fear and tension among camp residents.

Similar incidents occurred last year in the Abu Matariq refugee camp, which is the largest South Sudanese refugee settlement in East Darfur.
