Adre, October 18 (Darfur24)

A Sudanese refugee woman was killed in the Adre refugee camp in eastern Chad after being sexually assaulted, an incident that has sparked widespread shock and anger among refugees and the local community.

Refugees in eastern Chad continue to face insecurity inside the camps, alongside shortages of food, drinking water, and medical care.

Sources told Darfur 24 on Saturday that the woman’s body was found on the side of a road. Initial investigations by Chadian authorities revealed that she had been strangled with a rope. A forensic examination confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted before her death.

The victim, believed to be in her fifties, worked near Adre Central Hospital and was attacked early in the morning while heading to her workplace. She had previously been employed at El Geneina University in West Darfur, Sudan.

The incident comes amid growing security concerns in Sudanese refugee camps in eastern Chad, particularly in Adre, which has witnessed repeated security tensions in recent months.

Chadian authorities have opened an investigation and pledged to take the necessary legal measures to uncover the circumstances of the crime and prosecute those responsible.

Since the outbreak of war in Sudan in April 2023, nearly one million Sudanese have fled to Chad, which was already hosting about 409,000 Sudanese refugees from previous waves of conflict in Darfur since 2003, according to the United Nations.
