Port Sudan, October 14 (Darfur24)
The Chairman of the Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, on Monday dismissed the Governor of the Central Bank of Sudan, Barai al-Siddiq, and appointed Amna al-Toum as his successor.
Media outlets close to the military reported that Barai had insisted on restricting the purchase and export of gold exclusively to the Central Bank, in line with recommendations from the Economic Emergency Committee. However, Finance Minister Gibril Ibrahim supported the demands of private companies to be allowed to export gold.
Sources said Barai walked out of a cabinet meeting convened to discuss the issue in anger.
In a statement obtained by Darfur 24, the Sovereignty Council confirmed that al-Burhan had issued a decree removing Barai al-Siddiq Ali Ahmed from his post.
According to the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company, Sudan produced 53 tons of gold between January and September 2025, generating $909 million in export revenue.
