Khartoum, September 30 (Darfur 24)

An official at the Ministry of Social Welfare said on Monday that security concerns raised by Khartoum State authorities are obstructing the registration and renewal of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Darfur 24 that the state government has “security reservations” about the activities of some NGOs due to overlapping roles between the ministry and the Humanitarian Aid Commission. He added that the ministry is working to resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, representatives of local and national NGOs accused Khartoum authorities of deliberately delaying registration renewals without providing clear explanations.

A senior official from one organization said the General Intelligence Service suspended their renewal despite the group meeting all legal requirements. “After much effort, we obtained only a one-month extension. We don’t know what will happen after that,” he told Darfur 24.

Another NGO representative said procedures became more complicated after the army took control of Khartoum, noting that many organizations are now operating without registration despite functioning normally during the war.

Darfur 24 has observed that some organizations previously suspended by the transitional government led by Abdalla Hamdok have resumed activities.

The Khartoum State government has recently made registration with the Humanitarian Aid Commission mandatory for all organizations engaged in voluntary work.
