Kadugli, September 30 (Darfur24)
Medical sources at Kadugli Teaching Hospital have confirmed that more than 500 people have died of cholera in Kadugli and surrounding areas, as the city’s health system nears total collapse due to acute shortages of essential medicines and medical supplies.
Health workers told Darfur24 that the daily death toll has risen to between 10 and 15, warning that the situation is deteriorating rapidly. Intravenous solutions, critical for cholera treatment, are almost unavailable in public hospitals and are sold in private pharmacies for up to 50,000 Sudanese pounds per course.
Public hospitals lack basic medical services, including medicines, laboratory reagents, and anesthetics, forcing patients to rely on private clinics that are unaffordable for most residents.
Health sources also warned that widespread hunger and malnutrition are weakening people’s immune systems, while malaria and other diseases are spreading amid severe shortages of drugs and medical supplies.
The Ministry of Health earlier reported 1,851 cholera infections and 183 deaths statewide as of September 27, identifying Kadugli as the epicenter of the outbreak, which has spread to several parts of the region.
