Nyala, September 22 (Darfur24)
A large-scale cholera vaccination campaign began Sunday in Nyala, South Darfur, targeting three localities amid a fast-spreading outbreak in the state.
Since the end of May, when the first case was detected, cholera has infected 5,242 people and killed 258 in Nyala.
According to a press statement by the South Darfur Ministry of Health, the campaign aims to vaccinate one million people across Nyala North, Nyala Municipality, and Bilil locality, east of the city. He noted that the campaign will run for ten days in its first phase with support from the World Health Organization (WHO).
Federal Health Minister Alaa El-Din Nugud announced that a second batch of vaccines has arrived through Chad, enabling the campaign to expand to the remaining states of Darfur.
Nugud said the ministry’s current strategy prioritizes the epidemic and the protection of maternal and child health. He also stressed efforts to build an integrated health system, after much of Sudan’s healthcare infrastructure collapsed during the ongoing war.
